Hi Scott, I'm that trumpet player from Charleston. This year is almost over and when I look back over all that has happened to me, the best thing was taking the piano class with you at ETV in Columbia, SC. Piano has brought so much enjoyment into my life. I practice daily. I thoroughly enjoy being home at night, going into my music room, putting on the headphones and practicing piano. I am working on about 4 songs right now. Two of them I have almost memorized. Every time I practice, I learn something new. Chord changes/progressions have taken on a whole new meaning. I've learned a lot about melody lines - you don't need a lot of differnt notes and rhythms to make a great melody. In short, thank you for this gift which will not only last forever, but will get better all of the time. Peace,
W Andruss

Scott, I've seen you on PBS several times. Your method is so common it's shameful. I've known it for years and love your presence and presentation. I wish your method was required for all teachers in elementary schools. The purpose of this note - I use a similar approach to teach my fellow workers mathematics. I think you are a great teacher. Your methods applied to other fields could revolutionize education in this country. Please keep up the great work. I hope you prosper.

I am really enjoying playing the piano!!!!! At Christmas I could play all the songs in the starter book that I had. Now I have moved on to oldies, 60's and 70;s music. I can even play Misty! I play 5 times a week for an hour or more and really enjoy it. I shared your technique with my 87 year old Aunt. She likes it too. Thanks for coming into my life. Can't wait to see your show and find out what else is happpening with you. I will check out the web site.

I saw your program on WLAE-TV (one of the local PBS stations in New Orleans) the other day. Playing piano with lead sheets sure beats having to trudge through hours and hours of lessons. (I did when I was a kid learning to play.) Wish I'd learned to read a lead sheet early on. One advantage with playing a lead sheet I might note is that if a player has problems with arthritis, it's easier on the hands because you choose to strike the notes on the keyboard in a way that you feel comfortable, rather than having to do it in a way that would cause a flare-up. After all, there is flexibility with how one strikes a chord! This makes it fun and easy to play. Just a thought…

Scott, I just watched your special on public TV here in Cleveland Saturday night and was completely mesmerized! My mother plays the piano, and it was so much fun growing up with music in our house. As kids we went completely crazy in the house when she played "Flight of the Bumblebee! Is that a realistic favorite song that I could learn with your system or is that too complex of a song? I’m 40 years old and thought I missed the boat. All I can play is part of "Smoke on the Water" with one finger! You cannot believe how pumped up I was watching your special. I have a 4 and 7 year old daughter, and I can’t wait to get started. I WILL be playing Christmas carols for my family this year! Can you please tell me if a 3 hour drive to Springfield after an 8 hour day is the way to go, or can I do just as well just buying the merchandise? Besides your very engaging and entertaining presentation and personality, what are the advantages of the hands on workshop? Thanks for lighting the fire. I really can’t find the superlative that would explain what it would mean to be able to fill my house with the joy of piano music! And if there is anything I can do to help promote your program in the Cleveland area. I would love to help you get the word out. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a TV program that moved me the way your show did! Thanks!

Thanks again for the class. I really enjoyed your lecture. I went home and was able to use some of my self created guitar song sheets to play some nice music. I had never thought it could be so easy. But I am still interested in learning to read better and play the nice classical songs as well. I like the popular and classical variety. I look forward to seeing you on PBS.

Scott I just wanted to let you know that your system is exactly what i've been looking for. I'm simply amazed at the fact that you covered all of the basis that I have been thinking about. Why is it necessary to sit and concentrate on something that I have no interest in whatsoever? Your book is making all the sense in the world to me. I'll keep you updated on my progress. I'm excited as all outdoors! Thank you ever so much!!

I just caught your show on RSU TV which is a Public access college station in Oklahoma. I was thrilled. I am 36 years old and have always wanted to play the piano, but did not have the money for formal lessons as a child. I traded my dreams of piano for clairnet as my Uncle gave me one for music in school and then for the sax when the school provided it. I did manage to take a semester of piano in college, but my major did not allow time to follow my musical dreams. However my love for the piano continued, and I have tried with some success to teach myself. But my eyes were opened, and my fingers are sore from practicing already from the information giveen on your awesome show. This is easier than I ever imagined. I see the future, and I have a feeling I am going to get a lot more enjoyment out of my piano! Thanks so much.

Scott, I have played the piano (by ear w/barely any lessons) since I was 6 and am now almost 31 years old. I've played in bands and still play to this day, keyboards of course. I own 2 nice Roland keyboards and a Yamaha acoustic piano. I love playing the piano, and I love to listen to my favorite cd's or latest burns and learn the keyboard parts in them. More recently my focus has been on country and 70's music, although my initial comfort zone included mostly 80's and 90's rock, pop and a little bit of this and that. I have to say I always HATED to hear blues music and maybe it's because I felt inadequate in that category. But since I bought your DVD over a year ago, Play Piano in a Flash, after seeing your program on PBS, I turned over a new leaf. My boyfriend has a lot to do w/that too though because he's been playing bass for many years now, and he is very good at coaching me on what I might need to do differently. But after watching your DVD, I have been playing that little Blues riff w/the 6 or 7 notes up and down the keys, w/C F and G chords on bass notes forever now. I've played around with it, switched the tempo, did the upper keys different, etc. When people hear it they think that it's great and I can't thank you enuf for sharing your knowledge. Now I want to get the other 2 DVD's and see what other kind of hints I can pick up. It's nice to find someone willing to share their cheats/hints w/others!!! Thanks so much!!!

I took your course in Toronto. It was great and very informative! I don't know if you remember me, but I am the Gospel Singer who you were speaking to at the very end of the class. You are very knowledgeable. Keep up the great work and let me know when you are coming back to Toronto to teach some more music theory classes! All the Best.

Hi, Just a short note to let you know how much we enjoy your series with Scott Houston - The Piano Guy. PBS has always had good programming but this show is fun as well as informative. My daughter and I fight for the piano at the end of every show and we have both learned a lot. Scott is a great teacher breaking a complicated subject down for lay people. Keep up the great programming!
Dan

Saw your show for the first time and LOVED it. I am currently learning the flute (one year now) and have played piano, cello, violin and guitar. At 56 yearsold I have forgotten much of the music theory I learned at piano lessons. Consequently I was thrilled when I channel surfed and found you. I am not a avid TV fan especially on a Saturday mornings but it's winter in Buffalo, New York, and I was looking for a break in routine. What a great break, I am inspired. I emailed your site to my piano playing friend, and I be sure to inform my flute instructor as well. Good Luck but you won't need it!

Thanks so much for your program. I'm a piano lesson droppout (taking traditional piano lessons) and so are my children, who now have children. Music is important to us, and our conclusion is why couldn't our traditional teachers teach chords like you do. Your system has given us the WHY for memorizing the chords in the theory part of the traditional lessons.I've enjoyed making up tunes with my grandchildren, based on your instruction. I'm involved right now in teaching Watercolor and other art media, but as soon as I have summer break, I'll be reviewing and purchasing your books and programs. I'm excited about your new programs.
Lynn

Scott, I'm sure you get many of these notes, but I just wanted tosay thanks for rejuvinating my interest in playing piano. I'm one of those guys that played classical piano for years as a kid and stopped playing when I reached high school (I wish my teacher taught your method, I'd probably have never quit). Anyway, I received your Fake book last night, played 3 Christmas tunes right away and was amazed how easy it was. Can't wait to get home tonight and play some more. Thanks again!

Your show and technique gave me the motivation to restart my piano playing. I took lessons for 5 years while in elementary school and hated every minute. Now I am enjoying the learning and having a lot of fun playing! Keep up the great work!

Good Evening Scott, I am 44 years old and have been taking lessons for a little better than 2 years and really enjoy your show. It has not been showing in my area for a while, but when it was on, it was one of the few programs that I would make a point of watching. I also would tape the show so I could go back and rewatch it to pick up your tips. All I can say is keep up the good work. Thank you very much,
P. DiPascal III

I am trying to get my hands on anything that will give me another stepping stone toward my desire to play. I play a little bit. I know the chords pretty well and the melody line. So now I'll be using your audio examples. Thank you so much for the help from the book. It has given me the encouragement I've needed to continue on. Most of all it gave me "CONFIDENCE" in myself - by convincing me that what I am playing is ok. You’ve convinced me that it doesn’t matter that I have had no lessons of any kind, not even when I was in school. Most of all, you have taught me that if it sounds good to me then it’s acceptable. I don’t need to worry about whether a teacher would think it is the right or wrong way. I am 55 and just had a nagging ache to play piano, so my hubby bought me a 73 or 78 key keyboard, which has been the joy of my life. I really love to play gospel and hymns. They are my favorites, but I love all kinds of music. Before reading the book I was ashamed for people to hear me. I’m still not where I want it to be, but I will be before long ! Again, thank you for the vote of "Confidence,” which is something I have never had in myself on anything. I do now! At first, your book was not what I expected it to be, and I was disappointed. But I kept reading it, and after I finished, I had a complete new outlook. I am proud of my accomplishments. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Regards,
Marlene

Dear scott, I have to tell you that I really am doing well playing tunes now. Thanks to your video, teaching me to play was really awsome. I never thought that I could do what I'm doing because to just look at a piano and seeing all those keys just freaked me out until I got your dvd set. Now I know what it's all about. Im finding so many songs that were popular when I was a kid 62 years ago that I can now find the melody and chords. I can make music with a little practice. It just freaks me out man. I'm into the blues run that you showed on your video and found so many songs that are played in that style, unbelievable. Thanks so much for being there and the great way you teach. God bless.
J. Boggio

I like your show & playing style. I've played guitar since I WAS 16 years old. I'M 52 years old! NOW, I PLAY GUITAR VERY WELL. My mom wanted me to play piano. I tried about 8 yrs until I lost my desire to play. About 1.5 yrs. ago I seached for a way to play keyboard! I got a cpu program to play piano. She taught at Juilliard. I got bored because I wanted to learn at a faster rate!! I needed to start recording at home. I found one guy who was Ok, but I found you on pbs by accident. I have been following along. Now I play well enough to record!! I've learned from watching & trying. For the 1st time in my life I'm starting Jazz. If mom could hear me now she would be happy!! I PLAN TO CARRy ON! Thanks for sharing the tips & tricks that the pros use!!

I happened to tune in late last night and saw you on our PBS station (Houston, TX.) I totally agree with your teaching style. I inherited a great piano (Bosendorfer grand piano,) and I just started to play by learning chords to songs I like to sing. My family says all my songs sound the same since I just "tickle" the notes of the chords I play. (I do not play melody ...) Hearing you last night encouraged me to keep practicing. (I have to tell you, not really knowing how to read music is a "hurdle" I have had to endure when asked by others.) I noticed you do not have a workshop in Houston Texas, however, I feel the material presented last night will address many of my questions concerning "tricks of the trade". I logged on to see if I could order via the internet, however, if I cannot, I'll call the local PBS station and order your package. Again, I have pretty much quoted you by telling others that to learn, one needs to pick a favorite song and start playing something immediately. I have never found a piano teacher that would teach me like the method I saw last night. I am excited about receiving your material and look forward to hearing from you. As I iterated earlier, I have this "great" piano, and I have decided to expand my horizons. I believe you have the "tools" I have been looking for. Sorry for the lengthy message, but I really look forward to your response and to playing my beautiful piano. (The piano sounds so good... I can imagine what it will sound like if I really learn to play via your teaching methods.) Thanks for the encouragement,
R. Martinez, Houston, TX

Happy Holidays, Scott Thanks for finding the way to get musical ability into someone like me. The pleasure I get will last from now on. I owe it all to you. I already own just about everything you've made having just received "Tips and Cheap Tricks-Vols 3 and 4 this week. Keep adding to those. I'll buy them all.
Mike

I really enjoyed and learned a lot from your book and Audio CD called, Play Piano in a Flash.Music is something magical to me. It is medicine for my soul... I struggle with depression, diabetes and glaucoma. When I play the piano, the room lights up like a Christmas tree. When I play I feel bright, clever and young again. I see myself as a musician that is fiesty, alert and always learning something new. I never thought I could learn how to play the piano, but you made it simple for me. Your paino lessons touched me and made my life a better and brighter place. You made my life fun again. Sincerely,
J. Bilbrey, Marion, Indiana

I love your TV show whenever I can catch it in Atlanta, and I’ve attended one of your seminars. I enjoyed it thoroughly and learned a lot. I was trained in classical music and never learned to play chord style until you and your program came along and made it easy. As one of your students, and having met you, I have found you to be a man of integrity — honest, genuine, knowledgeable and fun. I don’t recall you ever having referenced your credentials either in the seminar or on the TV shows I’ve seen. They are impressive, but having met you, hardly necessary. Keep up the good work.
Deborah

I have taken piano lessons on and off all my life...you are the first instructor that has been able to help me make sense of the relationship between the keyboard and the music sheet.
S. Sullivan, San Mateo, CA

I saw a workshop of yours on a PBS fund drive, and I thought you were brilliant. You hit the nail right on the head with the whole reading issue. I am a piano teacher in Boise, Idaho. I have influence if you would be interested in giving a clinic here or in Salt Lake City. I was taught the classical/read-only way clear through graduate school! Something is clearly wrong with the system! When all my friends (jazzers or pop musicians) could improvise out of college and I couldn't, I knew there was a problem. Since then, I don't start new beginners with reading for months. I can't tell you how liberating and wonderful this change has been for me and for my students!! Thank you for your great work! Sincerely,
J. Draney, Boise, Idaho

Dear Scott, I went ballistic when I first saw your show 1 week ago. These are the same methods I've been using for years. I'm an accordian player turned keyboardist which probably makes it obvious why I use your chording method. No, I can't play the organ for our church choir, but as you advertise, I can sound like I know what I'm doing to most people and create a very nice sound.I've played in successful rock bands using your method during the 1970's. Thanks for JUSTIFYING my existence! I'm in the NJ/NY area, and I hope channel 13 continues to air your show. BTW, My 18 year old son who is a percussionist was also glued to the set during your show - and he GOT IT! Thanks again,
T. McHugh

It really works! After only a couple of weeks of very limited time, and playing ONLY when (and what) I like, I have mastered not one but four of my favorite songs! Each successive tune is easier than the previous because there are fewer new chords to learn. I just love playing, and will try to teach my 8-year-old grandson to play too! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
C. Hersker, West Chester PA

I started piano lessons as a young girl. I took them for 7 years, and I have to say I missed something. Couple years ago my dream came true and I was able to purchase a baby grand! I have had a ball playing for my own enjoyment, but I have to say I have been so frustrated to learn that those 7 years didn't teach me much. I have viewed your shows many times and each time I've learned so much. Most importantly, I have learned not to beat myself up because I don't play as well as some may after taking 7 years of piano lessons. Thank you for your wonderful teaching techniques from someone who will never be a professional pianist but only use my playing for my enjoyment! I love playing for my grandchildren! Keep up the good work! Thank you!
